"Under Christmas Skies," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

underxmasskies.jpgKeeping their 28-year streak going, this indie-pop duo drops their 2023 entry, a mid-tempo number with dramatic Ennio Morricone guitar accents exploring the link between Christmas and Halloween. As always, the song is free and the link will take you to every one of their past holiday tunes.

"Drum Story," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

gwinnedrum.jpgWe've got a long list of these guys' songs in the Mistletunes archives. For 2022 they give us a Christmas poem over musical backing as their seasonal offering. As always, it's a free download and the link offers you this year's song as well as all their past Christmas tunes.

"Santa Tell Me How Does It Go," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

deadsantagwyn.jpgAnother free Christmas song for 2021 by longtime friends of the site, this one is less of the indie-rock homemade sound they've given us before and more of a pop-rock holiday ballad. It also sounds a lot more produced than their previous submissions; maybe Santa bulked up their home studio gear during the pandemic? As always, go to the site and download it, and feel free to graze previous years' songs while you're there.

"Christmas Is My Blue Sky Rain," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

deadgwinbluesky.jpgYet another Mistletunes tradition is the unveiling of the annual new holiday tune by Dead Gwynne, which is not only free to download but so is every other holiday song they've done in the past, and all at the same link. This year's tune is a talk-sing of an impressionistic lyric over a prominent bass line and grungy synth. Check it out, no cost to you.

"Now That Was a Day," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

nowthatwasaday.jpgWouldn't be a Christmas season at Mistletunes without another offering from this duo, posted free at their home page for your holiday enjoyment. This one, a decidedly indie-sounding number, is an angular uptempo rocker with a shuffling rhythm and hopeful lyrics. Play it where it lays or download it. As always, the duo's past Christmas tunes are available in the same place.

"Bells Ring," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

bellsgwynne.jpg
It's just not the Christmas season at Mistletunes until we've heard from this DIY duo, who now have 26 free-of-charge Christmas tunes for our readers to dig into. The 2018 entry is a minor-key talk-sing with an insistent rhythm and just a touch of, well, bells. It's an easy download, so check it out.

"Red and Green," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

redanddead.jpgWe post these guys every year because they selflessly write and record a new original Christmas song that they make available free for downloading. Their 22nd release is a downtempo folky strum colored with prominent organ backing a talk-sing vocal, featuring a melancholy look at the holiday. When you click on the cover art, you can download any or all of the group's oeuvre.

"Christmas Time" and "Christmas Flow," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

deadgwynne2016.jpgKeeping up their string of annual releases, these guys give us two free songs in 2016. "Christmas Time" is an upbeat acoustic ditty with bongos, and "Christmas Flow" brings in some fuzzy electric guitar crunch. As always, these guys' complete Christmas discography is freely downloadable from the link.

"Christmas From Above," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

DG2015.jpg
Once again we get a holiday tune from this group, keeping a 20-year string intact. For 2015, the song has the "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" strum but the vocal recalls Lou Reed. As always, it's free, and you'll be able to browse all the previous years' songs while you're there.

"Supernova Star," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

supernova.jpg
These guys keep churning out the Christmas tunes, and this 2014 entry blends a little sci-fi with the story of the Nativity star and the Christmas tree topper. It's free to download, as are all this group's 20 or so past Christmas songs.

"A Christmas Song Just Like This," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

dgwynne13.jpgOur friends at Dead Gwynne have been doing a new Christmas song every single year since 1995 or thereabouts. This year's entry is a bit on the lo-fi side, in fact it kinda sounds like a demo, but it's a nice slice-of-life look at the mundane part of the holiday. And it's free, as are all the band's tunes -- there's 20 of them now.

"Lost Days of Christmas," Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

lostgwynne.jpg
These guys are like clockwork: one brand new rock 'n roll Christmas song a year going back to the 1990s. This year's midtempo rocker is a jaundiced view of Christmas tedium, but is no less catchy for all that. Visit them here and grab the new one, and you can check out their past efforts from the same page.

"Christmas Whisper," The Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

This duo has been doing a free Christmas song every year for more than a decade, and for 2011 this stutter-stop rocker led by piano and reverb guitar is an impressionistic take on the holiday that worms its way into the old brainpan. It's free from their site, along with every other Christmas song they've ever recorded.

"Christmas Chill," the Dead Gwynne (self-issued)

This act puts up one fresh new Christmas song on their website annually (sometimes two), and for 2010 they go a little psychobilly on us, with chiming vibrato guitar chords building suspense while the singer talks about holiday preparations breaking the chill. Nice work, and it's free.
dedguin2.jpgDead Gwynne is a band that has a tradition of recording an original song for free distribution at Christmas time every year. This tradition was noted a couple of years ago but we lost track of them until they contacted us this year. They've provided a page with all their songs going back to 1995 for your listening convenience. The 2009 addition to the canon is "Christmas By the Light of the Moon," a pop-rocker about a nighttime holiday celebration. Collect the set and create the band's Christmas album for them.
